Las Vegas is the most populous city in Nevada, United States. Popular as a holiday destination, Las Vegas lives up to its reputation in every respect. Las Vegas is served by McCarran International Airport and Las Vegas Airport, located in North Las Vegas or by road a few hours' (about 480km) drive from Southern California.
Though gambling is the most obvious activity in Vegas, there are plenty of other things to do. Several casinos have aquariums, the Bellagio Hotel has a musical fountain which performs throughout the day and The MGM Grand has a lion habitat. Then there's the neon-illuminated pedestrian area, The Freemont Street Experience and Cirque du Soleil, which puts on a show every night. Outside of town visitors will find some of the best rock climbing in the United States at Red Rock Canyon. This is also a great place for day trips, hiking, and backpacking.
Established in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. With the growth that followed, at the close of the century Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded in the 20th century (a distinction held by Chicago in the 19th century). The city's tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and this image has made Las Vegas a popular setting for films and television programs. There are numerous outdoor lighting displays on Fremont Street, as well as elsewhere in the city.
